2018 EWA AWARDS
2018 was a year of change, rebirth and rejuvenation in the E-Wrestling Alliance. The year ended with more new faces than any year in recent memory but also saw some poignant returns and revelations about the status of many previous full time members. Wrestlers came and went but many made more of an impact than they had in many years. 2018 also saw many wrestlers grab the brass ring or at least reach for it, in unexpected ways. EWA changed forums and underwent some turbulent times to emerge on the other side stronger and in a better position to thrive than many might have expected. As always, for everyone who participated and worked hard to be a part of the EWA this year, THANK YOU! Now, onto the awards!
Rookie of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Walter |
2nd. - Runner Up | Gabrieli |
Winner | Fit Finlay |
2018 Rookie of the Year
FIT FINLAY
There were a lot of great new wrestlers this year, but this category wasn't even close with Finlay garnering about 80% of the votes. Gabriel and Walter both got a couple votes putting them into contention as well, but Finlay really showed people he had what it takes to compete with the big dogs in the EWA.
Stipulation Match of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Ken Shamrock vs. Trevor Mann - Submission Match at Summer Stampede |
2nd. - Runner Up | Ken Shamrock vs. Brock Lesnar - Lion's Den at SuperBrawl XVIII |
Winner | Big Show vs. The Miz - Autograph Match at Red, White & Bruised |
2018 Stipulation Match of the Year
AUTOGRAPH MATCH
BIG SHOW VS. THE MIZ
Unique stipulation matches always stick out in people's minds and while one usually thinks of the most grueling and brutal stipulation matches as the most memorable, this year it was one that didn't have blood or steel involved that took top honors. The feud between Miz and Big Show early in the year led to Miz arrogantly autographing the Big Show's unconscious body, leading to the showdown at Red, White & Bruised 2018 where the only way to win was to subdue your opponent long enough that you could autograph them. Ken Shamrock was in both of the runner up matches, coming up short as he did in those encounters with his brutal SuperBrawl XVIII Lion's Den match and the Submission match with Trevor Mann.
Singles Match of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | PCO vs. Gabriel - KOTR Final - King of the Ring |
2nd. - Runner Up | Trevor Mann vs. Ken Shamrock - Double Jeopardy - All Hallow's Evil |
Winner | Fit Finlay vs. Walter - King of the Ring |
2018 Singles Match of the Year
FIT FINLAY VS. WALTER
KING OF THE RING
This year had tons of great singles encounters, but it was the King of the Ring that really stuck out in people's minds. Surprisingly it wasn't the final that took top honors, although it did come in third. Instead it was the hard hitting battle between Fit Finlay and Walter that caught most people's attention. The aforementioned KOTR finals ranked third while the final match between Trevor Mann and Ken Shamrock got runner up.
Tag Team Match of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | OVE vs. Briscoes vs. Kings of Wrestling vs. SCP vs. Sabin/Omega vs. AJ Lee/Deville vs. Notorious - Tag Title at Mayhem |
2nd. - Runner Up | Lesnar/Sabin/Shamrock vs. Swagger/Mann/Gabriel - Sin City Survival |
Winner | OVE vs Sabin/Omega - Tag Title at Red, White & Bruised |
2018 Tag Team Match of the Year
OVE vs. SABIN/OMEGA
RED, WHITE & BRUISED
Tag team matches were quite prevalent this past year as they often are, but it was a series of unique encounters that stuck out in many people's minds. The Sin City Survival six man tag got a lot of votes, but was just barely bested by OVE's defense of the tag titles against the makeshift team of Chris Sabin and Kenny Omega. Sabin and Omega never managed to defeat OVE, but they did score this accolade instead. The wild multi-team tag bout at Mayhem came in third with several votes.
Where Did He Come From? | |
---|---|
3rd. | Lucas Calhoun |
2nd. - Runner Up | PCO |
Winner | Walter |
Where Did He Come From Winner
WALTER
Every year there are a few breakout stars who just sort of pop up one day and begin to turn heads. Whether it's a major impact with a huge victory or unique storylines, these characters are often oddballs but are superstars who really shake things up. This year's crop includes an Elvis impersonator, a man tormented by clowns and a French-Canadian Frankenstein! It's a unique crew, but these men very well could be the biggest stars of 2019 if a few cards fall in their hand. WALTER scores the trophy and the prestige off a hot performance at SuperBrawl XVIII!
Storyline of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Sabin's National Title Quest |
2nd. - Runner Up | bWo Fired/Hired/Fired |
Winner | Shamrock/Sable/Lesnar |
2018 Storyline of the Year
SHAMROCK/SABLE/LESNAR
There were a lot of unique storylines in 2018, including the bWo spending the entire year being fired and then rehired each month. Chris Sabin got a lot of attention by trying to raise the glory of being National Champion, but the storyline that resonated most with the voters was the unique triangle of Ken Shamrock, Sable and Brock Lesnar. This story saw Lesnar win over the hearts of the fans after leaving Sable, only for Sable to return at the side of Shamrock, causing Ken to lose his beloved status, only to reveal it was all a rouse to get Sable and Lesnar to one up Shamrock. The story came to a completion at SuperBrawl when it looked like Lesnar's plan had worked and he vanquished Ken Shamrock, only for the MMA legend to avenge the loss by winning the big event and taking the title and injuring Brock's ankle in the process!
Feud of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Trevor Mann versus Ken Shamrcok |
2nd. - Runner Up | Becky Lynch versus Charlotte |
Winner | Ken Shamrock versus Brock Lesnar |
2018 Feud of the Year
KEN SHAMROCK/BROCK LESNAR
Ken Shamrock was engaged in several major feuds this year and his two biggest were mentioned in this category. Lesnar's feud with Shamrock, which involved a double turn and Sable's mind games were recognized not only with storyline, but with the Feud of the Year. Shamrock's grueling feud with Trevor Mann came in a close third, with the wild women's feud of Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair taking runner up status.
Most Improved | |
---|---|
3rd. | Jack Swagger |
2nd. - Runner Up | Marty Jannetty |
Winner | Skinner |
2018 Most Improved
SKINNER
Although Skinner really didn't spend a lot of time in 2018, people were quickly impressed with how he managed to move up the ranks. When Skinner debuted, no one took much notice of him, but by the end of the year he was earning himself a National Title shot at SuperBrawl XVIII! Marty Jannetty continued to grow through the year, whilst Jack Swagger made a return and quickly found himself in multiple main event storylines shocking even the most ardent All-American American fans.
Faction of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Vaudevillians |
2nd. - Runner Up | bWo |
Winner | OVE |
2018 Faction of the Year
OVE
Although there weren't as many power stables in 2018 as previous years, there were plenty of smaller groups making an impact. The bWo garnered a lot of attention by working their way under the skin of a variety of guest GMs. The Vaudevillians once held some gold, while it was OVE's domination early in the year that seemed to get most people to realize just how good they were. At one point OVE completely dominated the EWA, in a match pitting them essentially against anyone in the company who wanted a shot at their tag titles... And the Crist Brothers and Sami Callihan came out on top, just like they did in this category.
Shocker of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Harry Smith Returns |
2nd. - Runner Up | Cody Rhodes Guest GM |
Winner | Brock Lesnar wins Civil War |
2018 Shocker of the Year
BROCK LESNAR WINS CIVIL WAR
There were plenty of surprise moments in 2018, including Harry Smith leaving the General Manager position to set up a series of guest General Managers throughout the year. It was Smith's return at the end of the year that seemed to take a lot of people's attention. Cody Rhodes return to the EWA as the first guest General Manager got runner up spot, setting the stage for a variety of unique GMs. But ultimately it was Brock Lesnar's dominant performance in Civil War, that started his long title reign that garnered the most votes and earned the winner's spot here. Lesnar not only dominated that match, he walked away with the title and this trophy as a result.
RP of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Fight of Flight - Team Shamrock |
2nd. - Runner Up | Born on the Bayou - Key |
Winner | Where is the Midnight Rider? - Brady |
2018 RP of the Year
WHERE IS THE MIDNIGHT RIDER? - BRADY
RPs are the name of the game and EWA continues to have one of the most unique and diverse set of roleplayers on the planet. This year, stores were all over the map from the wacky and wild, to the serious and straight forward. Voters seemed to love the basics, with Brock Lesnar's simple but effective backwoods promo coming in as runner up, while Brady's history lesson of the Midnight Rider took top honors. The large and comical Team Shamrock RP came in third as it was able to showcase a variety of styles in one roleplay.
RPer of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Key |
2nd. - Runner Up | Brett |
Winner | Lou |
2018 RPer of the Year
LOU
There were a ton of great roleplayers this year, with returning faces, tons of prime new talent and many of the stalwarts proving why they have contributed so much through the years. Key's Brock Lesnar and Sable were involved in several major storylines with peripheral characters like Amy Weber also taking time to shine. Brett returned after many years away and showed that like his character Ken Shamrock, he still had much left to give the sport. But the fans overwhelming voted in support of Lou, who with Chris Sabin and his complex relationship with Ruby Riott was able to take top honors as RPer of the year.
Event of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | SuperBrawl XVIII |
2nd. - Runner Up | King of the Ring |
Winner | All Hallow's Evil |
2018 Event of the Year
ALL HALLOW'S EVIL
Almost every year, SuperBrawl tends to take this category. But this year, SuperBrawl finished third, just narrowly edging out Red, White & Bruised, whilst King of the Ring re-established itself as a marquee event. But it was our Halloween themed All Hallow's Evil that won overall, a credit to the unique nature of the event and perhaps Elvira's breast, errr, best work.
Tag Team of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Strowman & Marella |
2nd. - Runner Up | Kings of Wrestling |
Winner | OVE |
2018 Tag Team of the Year
OVE
There were a lot of great tag teams this year, with the division seeing great growth at times, while it also had some low periods. The Kings of Wrestling really established themselves as a force, coming in as runner up, with only one vote separating them and the third place team, Braun Strowman and Santino Marella. But again, OVE's dominance earlier in the year and their three man stable seemed to be fresh in everyone's mind despite OVE not appearing on TV for many months. They managed to squeeze one more victory out with a win here.
Women's Wrestler of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Carmella |
2nd. - Runner Up | Tessa Blanchard |
Winner | Daffney |
2018 Women's Wrestler of the Year
DAFFNEY
Although it was hardly her best year, Daffney did capture the EWA Women's Championship to close out 2018 and that seemed to win people over and secure her enough votes. Her Dead Zone segments no doubt helped win her favor as well. Last year's female of the year, Carmella, proved to be quite a force in 2018 and ranked third while newcomer Tessa Blanchard nearly took the top honor.
Wrestler of the Year | |
---|---|
3rd. | Chris Sabin |
2nd. - Runner Up | Ken Shamrock |
Winner | Brock Lesnar |
2018 Wrestler of the Year
BROCK LESNAR
This was a story of three men, all doing great things in 2018. Chris Sabin was a distant third, while Lesnar and Shamrock took the lion's share (no pun intended) of the votes. But Brock pulled away with several more than Shamrock and proved that his near record breaking reign in 2018 was enough to get a lot of praise from the voters. Brock Lesnar often carried the EWA on his back during lean times in 2018 and as the federation's competition got even more intense, Brock was able to handle the pressure and adapt in a way that few others before him have.
