The faction's name is taken from that of the proverb of "Misery loves company." Online information on the phrase states as follows: "the short phrase is described as universal knowledge or common sentiment. Further, it refers to the habit of unfortunate people to find comfort in the fact that others are suffering with them. Also, it does not mean that they want others to suffer, but knowing that they are not alone gives them relief, and a feeling of togetherness. Alas, the negative side of this proverb is that the mentioned miserable people tend to bring others down, just to feel the consolation."
However, this perhaps begs the question, "What is Misery?" The answer appears to be "a state or feeling of great distress or discomfort of mind or body," along with "a cause or source of great distress or discomfort."
So it could be summed up that the group was brought together as those that wished to make others suffer as a means to ease their own pain.
