After the shocking ending of Spring Scramble, we didn't have to wait long to hear from our new World Heavyweight Champion, as Marty Scurll and "The Horde" opened this week's SLAM! Perhaps it says more about my suspicious nature than anything else, but Scurll claiming that the title belonged to the entire "Horde" seems disingenuous at best. Despite what he says to the contrary, he doesn't strike me as the kind of person who likes to share his accolades. Still, the big development coming out of "The Villain's" gloating session was the news that we'll next week see the return of the "Beat The Clock Challenge!" We've got four potential blockbuster matches as Brock Lesnar will take on Jake Roberts, Jack Evans goes one-on-one with Buh Buh Ray Dudley, Bryan Danielson tackles Fit Finlay, and Brady Pierce faces off with "King" Walter! Which superstar can defeat their opponent the quickest and earn a championship opportunity? We'll find out next Sunday!
Following "British Strong Style's" big victory at Spring Scramble over "The Kings of Wrestling," Trent Seven and Tyler Bate were back in action this week, scoring another win to keep their momentum going. Not only that, but the boys from "Mustache Mountain" made it clear that anyone who wants to earn a Tag Team Championship opportunity will have to go through them first. Sounds like a challenge to me!
Speaking of "British Strong Style," we also heard from Samoa Joe regarding the events of last week. According to "The Destroyer," their victory was nothing for Pete Dunne and co to be proud of, citing the fact that he entered that match at less than 100% following the three-on-one assault he suffered several weeks ago whereas Joe himself had managed to take out Bate and Seven all by himself previously. Unsurprisingly, those comments provoked a strong reaction from the "Bruiserweight" later in the broadcast, refuting Joe's claims and throwing out some serious insults in his direction. Indeed, it seems as if the only thing these two superstars can agree on right now is that sooner rather than later, they're going to have to settle this in a match! And like I said last week, I for one can't wait to see that finally happen, whenever that might be!
In our first title match of the night, Charlotte Flair found herself defending against Scarlett Bordeaux. "The Perfect Ten" has arguably been the standout member of "The Kingdom" since they arrived in the EWA earlier this year, and you could see just how badly she wanted her first taste of championship gold last night. However, Charlotte Flair spent six months scratching and clawing for the right to call herself Women's Champion, and you could be damn sure she had no intention of falling in her first defence! It was a slobberknocker of a contest, one that went back-and-forth for nearly 15 minutes, until Charlotte Flair finally managed to put Scarlett away with the Natural Selection. Chalk up a huge win for "The Queen," but if this was anything to go by, I for one would love to see these two highly talented young ladies go at it again in the not-too distant future!
Nick Aldis made a shock return to the EWA at Spring Scramble, teaming with Chris Hero to capture the Tag Team Championships. Well, "The National Treasure" wasted little time in celebrating that victory, with his associates rolling out a literal red carpet for him. Apparently though, winning Tag Titles for a third time was just the beginning, with the man formerly known as "Nicholas Magnus" also setting his sights on becoming "the greatest World Heavyweight Champion the EWA has ever seen!" These bold claims would result in Chris Hero coming out to join the party, with "The Knockout Artist" looking to make sure he and Aldis were still on the same page, despite the Brit's lofty ambitions. Indeed, it seems as if the rest of "The Kings of Wrestling" weren't particularly impressed with Nick Aldis' "Crusade" for the gold or how little he cared about his new teammates. Still, Hero stuck up for his new partner, promising that he'll be able to get Aldis in line with the rest of "The Kings." I have to say though, considering how long and hard Nick Aldis has worked to get back to the EWA, not to mention how he marches to the beat of his own drum, that may well be easier said than done.
What a match between Aleister Black and Jay White, with "The Anti-Hero" particularly looking like he's nearing his best once again. Indeed, one might consider him unlucky to be on the losing end here. As for Jay White, it's no secret that he's had a downright awful attitude from the moment he arrived in the EWA. "The Switchblade" has spent a long time running his mouth about supposedly being too good for the EWA, at least in his own mind, but he hadn't exactly done much to back that up in the ring in the last month. Still, just as it seemed White was about to publicly quit the company, both he and the "Guerrillas of Destiny" found themselves annihilated by an enraged Brock Lesnar. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as Lesnar vented some of his well-deserved frustrations over getting screwed out of the World Championship at Spring Scramble by Marty Scurll! Meanwhile though, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying here's hoping the door doesn't hit Jay White on the ass on the way out!
"The Flamingo Family" weren't part of Spring Scramble, but it sounds as if they're not going to miss out on the next Pay-Per-View if they have anything to say about it. What better way to do so than Buh Buh Ray beating Jack Evans next Sunday? Buh Buh isn't the only superstar looking ahead to next week though, with "The Clown King" himself sending in an ominous message about his intentions for the World Championship. That is, if he can make it past Brady Pierce next weekend!
Meanwhile, Santino Marella seems to be dicing with death a lot more than I'm sure he imagined since taking over from Al Snow as the leader of the "bWo." Could it be that Colt Cabana is looking to take the "Italian Stallion" out by any means necessary in order to take over the "Blue World Order," a position which should arguably have been his in the first place? It certainly seems as if JoJo thinks so, but if I were Santino, I'd tread extra carefully when Cabana is around.
Our main event saw Fit Finlay throw out an open challenge for anyone who wanted a National Championship opportunity. That challenge was answered by Buff Bagwell and Jake "The Snake" Roberts, two veterans like Finlay who obviously know their way around the squared circle. Still, "The Belfast Bruiser" is the kind of competitor who doesn't ever back down from a fight, and he gave it his all against his opponents in this one. Considering the three competitors have a combined age of 173, you wouldn't know it from the breakneck pace of this battle, with both champion and challengers turning back the clock! Honestly, if for whatever reason you didn't catch this week's show, you need to go back and check out this triple threat match. It's just a damn shame that when it came down to it, the match and the National Championship itself was decided thanks to the attempted outside interference by Marty Scurll! Right as it was reaching its conclusion, "The Villain" managed to trip Fit Finlay, allowing his fellow "Horde" member to DDT Buff Bagwell right on top of him, securing the three count and the gold! Talk about a difference maker, especially in a match where it was coming down to the wire anyway! To say that Fit Finlay will be feeling robbed right now is a huge understatement, but if there's some small consolation to be had, at least he's got a shot at revenge next week as part of the "Beat The Clock Challenge." If he can defeat Bryan Danielson, and do so in the quickest time of the four matches, "The Fighting Irishman" will get his hands on Scurll, who has no shortage of potential challengers lining up right now. For the time being though, it looks as if "The Horde" are slowly but surely taking over the EWA...and at this point, one has to wonder just who can possibly stop them?
Well, with all that said and done, let's take a look at my picks for this week's top three movers and shakers:
1. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
2. Charlotte Flair
3. Brock Lesnar
While you can argue with the way it came about, it doesn't change the fact that we've got a brand new National Champion and that man is Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Coming in at number two, Charlotte Flair successfully defended her Women's Title in a hell of a bout with Scarlett Bordeaux! And last but not least, I've given Brock Lesnar the third spot after the way he completely decimated Jay White and his "Bullet Club," seemingly sending them packing from the EWA. It might not have been Marty Scurll or "The Horde" that Lesnar managed to get his hands on, but I'm sure it brought some small sense of satisfaction at least!
So there we have it! Things are showing no sign of cooling down right now, and with the "Beat The Clock Challenge" all set up for next week, we could be in store for even more interesting developments! Trust me when I say, you're not going to want to miss out when SLAM! returns to the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati next Sunday! Until then,
BOOMER SOONER!
